What “Craft-First” Actually Means in a Review

I watch movies two ways at once: as a person in a seat who wants to be moved, and as someone studying how that feeling was built.

The dual score

Every full-length review on this channel tries to do two jobs:

• Craft read — direction, cinematography, editing, sound, production design, performance choices, narrative architecture.
• Audience read — is this worth your time, money, and attention? Where does it land for a general viewer?

Those are not the same thing. A film can be a technical clinic and still feel empty. It can also be rough around the edges and still work.

Why this matters if you want to make films

Studying failure is as useful as studying success. When a remake collapses, or a franchise installment coasts, the lesson is usually visible in the frame — not just in the box office.
